The Swedish automaker is aiming to make its cars death-proof and reduce the number of collisions involving its cars to zero. It's an ambitious goal, but Volvo is already taking steps to achieve this, reducing the top speed of all current models to 112 mph and investing in state-of-the-art LiDAR and autonomous driving tech for the electric Volvo XC90 successor. To demonstrate how effectively its Collision Warning and Emergency Brake system can avoid collisions, Volvo Trucks has shared an eye-opening video on social media showing a semi-truck performing a brake test that highlights why its cars are so safe.

In the first test, the Collision Warning system with Emergency Brake system brings the 40-ton semi-truck to a halt inches in front of an obstacle simulating a stationary car, causing the cab to jolt violently.

If that wasn't already impressive, Volvo then uses a real V70 wagon and risks someone's life to simulate a highway driving scenario where the car in front of the truck slows down. Once again, the technology does its job brilliantly and brings the 40-ton truck to a stop just a few inches behind the wagon, preventing a crash. Volvo Trucks Volvo Trucks It's an effective demonstration of how Volvo's safety technology can save lives.

We also get a cockpit view showing just how close the semi-truck came to hitting the car in front, and it's scary to watch. As the truck approaches the slowing car, a warning light activates.

When the driver fails to respond, a siren blares to alert the driver before the emergency brakes are applied, bringing the truck to a safe stop and averting disaster. An older video published by Volvo in 2019 shows trucks stopping from lower speeds and leaving more distance in front of the stationary car, which only highlights how the safety technology has improved over time.
