Longtime Donald Trump ally Steve Bannon faces a judge Friday and a possible six-month sentence after he was found guilty on two counts of contempt of Congress in July
Earlier this week, the Department of Justice recommended a six-month prison sentence and fine of $200,000 for Bannon defying a Congressional subpoena to go before the House January 6 Committee. "The rioters who overran the Capitol on January 6 did not just attack a building — they assaulted the rule of law upon which this country was built and through which it endures," federal attorneys wrote in court documents."By flouting the Select Committee's subpoena and its authority, the Defendant exacerbated that assault."
The Justice Department statement comes after the committee took the extraordinary step last week to subpoena Trump himself, something panel members said was necessary to get the full story of what happened during and before last year's attack.

It's unclear how Trump will respond to the summons. Prosecutors are seeking a penalty of 6 months in jail and a fine of $200,000. Bannon's continued obstruction warrants longer sentence than recommended. Hope the court takes that into consideration.

Refusal to comply could open up a similar path in court — though holding a former president in contempt would be an unprecedented and fraught process. It may also bolster the leverage lawmakers have in securing cooperation of witnesses resistant to participating in congressional investigations. Bannon's lawyers, meanwhile, deny he was acting in bad faith.

Prosecutors have asked the judge in his case to impose a hefty sentence of six months in jail , while Bannon’s lawyers have argued their client deserves a sentence of probation. 6th committee, in Washington, D. They're asking for probation, even though his two contempt convictions each carries a mandatory minimum of one month behind bars.

21, 2022. Bannon's case would run contrary to the fundamental constitutional principles of individualized sentencing and sentencing proportionality," defense attorneys wrote. Prosecutors argued Bannon , 68, deserved the longer sentence because he had pursued a “bad faith strategy,” and his public statements disparaging the committee itself made it clear he wanted to undermine their effort to get to the bottom of the violent attack and keep anything like it from happening again.

Here’s what to know going into Bannon’s sentencing: It’s possible Bannon won’t be serving his sentence any time soon Nichols will not only be deciding what punishment Bannon should face; the judge will also determine whether that punishment will wait until after the Trump ally’s appeal of his conviction has played out. .
