The base Focus looks like a nice economy car, but speculation has already begun about the upcoming ST and RS performance models. The Focus RS is rumored to produce around 400 horsepower from a mild hybrid drivetrain, and now, according to Auto Guide, news has emerged that the Focus ST will produce 275 hp from a surprising new engine. The latest Fiesta ST, which won't be sold in the United States, downsized from a four-cylinder to a three-cylinder engine.

We may not get the Fiesta ST in the US market, but Ford may apply the same downsizing principle to the new Focus ST. The ST is expected to ditch its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in favor of a 1.5-liter turbo three-cylinder from Ford's new L Dragon family of engines. Engine downsizing may sound like a bad thing, but this little three-pot is expected to produce around 275 hp.

This would represent a healthy 23 hp gain over the current car, as well as the perfect amount to challenge new rivals such as the Hyundai Veloster N. Ford The three-cylinder engine will be more efficient than the current four-cylinder, which achieves 22/30 mpg city/highway. In addition, this three-cylinder engine is expected to offer cylinder deactivation, so it can run as a two-cylinder for greater fuel savings.
