The New Renault Alpine Is So Aerodynamic It Doesn' t Need A Rear Wing

Feb. 22, 2017 4:00 PM ET by Martin Bigg Teaser / 8 Comments Time for one last ride through Paris as a prototype before its Geneva debut. This year's Geneva Motor Show will mark the long-awaited debut of the successor to the iconic Renault Alpine A110.

Rumored to be called the A120, little has been shown of the sleek sports car, but new photos released by Alpine show a camouflaged prototype model being paraded around the streets of Paris in what is apparently the "last trip" before the car's full reveal next month. Of course, previous spy shots have already shown how the Alpine A120 will closely resemble the stunning concept model. But these official photos represent our best look at the near-final model yet.

Unsurprisingly, even in camouflage, the A120 proves to be very photogenic - we can't wait to see the final production model in all its glory. The new resurrected Renault Alpine is more than just a pretty face, however.

It promises to be a treat to drive, thanks to its lightweight, all-aluminum chassis making it up to 50% lighter than some of its rivals. Remarkable aerodynamics should also make it extremely agile.

Alpine has fitted a flat floor and a diffuser into the rear bumper to generate "significant downforce and excellent stability." It's so aerodynamic that it doesn't even need a rear wing which could have potentially spoiled its alluring looks. As for performance, the only morsel of information Alpine has shared is that the A120 will sprint from 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds. Rumor has it that it will be fitted with a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine derived from a 1.6-liter Renault Clio RS producing a power output of around 250 horsepower.

All we know is that we want one badly. Alpine is currently taking reservations for the Premiere Edition limited to 1,995 units, but we may have to wait a while until it reaches the US. Alpina
