We're officially running out of reasons to own a Toyota Prius. The EV is renowned for its efficiency, but Chevrolet has thrown a curveball at Toyota with the news that the upcoming Cruze Diesel sedan has been officially certified by the US Environmental Protection Agency at 52 miles per gallon on a highway when equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. In other words, the highway mpg of the Prius has been beaten.

By a diesel. We'd call that a victory. GM The news confirms reports from last year that the Cruze's highway fuel economy would exceed 50 mpg, making it the first non-hybrid car to do so in the US since the Honda CRX HF.

Combined fuel economy for the manual Cruze Diesel is said to be 37 mpg, while city driving is rated at 30 mpg. Equip the Cruze Diesel with a nine-speed automatic, and you'll achieve 47 mpg on the highway and 31 mpg in the city, resulting in the same 37 mpg combined rating. "Chevrolet is dedicated to offering customers a wide range of propulsion options," said Steven Majoros, director of Chevrolet Marketing.

We know there are customers looking for the right combination of fuel efficiency, driving dynamics, fuel type and more. With the EPA-estimated 52-mpg highway Cruze Diesel sedan, they can get it all." It's worth noting that the combined 52 mpg rating of the Prius still beats the Cruze by some margin.

But while city commuters will get better results in an EV, the Cruze seems like a much better option for long distance cruising at highway speed. The limited ranges of an EV simply can't compete. Powering the 2017 Cruze Diesel is a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder sending 137 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels.
