How We Tested the Smart Scales  To generate a list of our top 10 smart scales, five of our expert product testers evaluated 20 smart scales in The Verywell Testing Lab to see how they performed in key areas, including setup, accuracy, precision, readability, data storage, ease of use, and overall value. Setup The first attribute we tested for was setup. Testers unboxed each smart scale, downloaded the corresponding app, and paired the scales with their smartphones. They noted how easy the scale was to set up, how intuitive the app was to navigate, and how efficiently the scale paired with their devices.

Then, they held a 5-pound dumbbell and weighed themselves three more times, ensuring that their first number had increased by 5 pounds, as expected. Testers noted whether or not the smart scales read the same as the analog scale and if their weight remained consistent throughout the test, varying no more than two decimal points.

Smart scales that received a high score for this attribute could switch from different weight units quickly, had a bright display screen with large enough numbers, and offered data readings in pounds, kilograms, and stones.

Your scale needs to have the capacity to record and store your metrics (like BMI, total body water, muscle mass, and more). Our testers gave high scores to scales that could be easily understood, provided more than 10 additional data points other than weight (like BMI, body fat percentage, etc.), could easily record data for at least 10 users, and had a compatible app to easily track metrics. Ease of Use Testers took note of ease of use throughout the smart scale testing process. Scales that did not require recalibration or additional instructions (like tapping your foot on the scale before use) received high scores for this attribute.

The downside to Bluetooth scales is that you must have your smartphone within range to successfully log results.
