Unfortunately, despite the wide circulation of the video, it hasn't had the desired impact at school. "Sadly, nothing has changed at my school, nor other schools.

There weren't any issues until 7th period when Kenzie was written up for "showing her stomach." Drew, meanwhile, didn't get into any trouble at all, despite his outfit clearly not covering his stomach either. The school staff told Kenzie that her shirt was too revealing and offered for her to go change in the resource room. "Honestly, it just makes me want to wear clothes like that more because the standards are so not the same," she told BuzzFeed.

Drew has been filming himself blatantly wearing clothes that would get him in trouble if he were a female student, but so far, he hasn't been called out. "There were a bunch of comments saying that I should do it with a girl and see if she would get dress-coded. I had known that dress codes had been unfair for a while, I just didn't know to this extent.

They could just not be sexist. 13 13points reply Daphne Williams Daphne Williams Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago It's odd that you're trying to make the argument that uniforms are by default sexist, as though all schools have the exact same type of uniform, and there are federal laws in place to make sure it stays that way. 3 3points reply Om Om Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago I'm in Mexico and my "uniform" in high school was literally blue jeans, and a polo t shirt with the logo of the school. Women did have a skirt, but most of the year they were allowed to wear the jeans, and tbh I think years after I graduated it was allowed all year long (most girls preferred the skirt though). Jackets were also allowed, as long as they were black, blue, white or gray.

The premise behind uniforms has always been to provide school identity for the students and to prevent prejudice against those children who maybe can't afford the cool clothes or brand name clothes etc. It's supposed to prevent socioeconomic differences playing too big a role in school.

And the kids have all the rest of the time to wear what they want, including evenings, weekends and all the school vacations. 6 6points reply Daphne Williams Daphne Williams Community Member • points posts comments upvotes FollowUnfollow 1 year ago (edited) Uniforms do not have to be expensive, and if the entirety of your self expression comes from your clothing, that's some pretty shallow self expression you got there. I had a friend who grew up in an area where poor kids were bussed to a school in a wealthier area, and all of the rich kids could "express themselves" (I'm using this term lightly, because a lot of teenage clothing choices are born out of what they think will impress other people) with the latest trends and brands and would mock and humiliate the poor kids whose parents couldn't afford to buy them the best or trendiest stuff.

And a lot of parents complain about expense if uniforms have to be from specific stores. They could just not be sexist.

Women did have a skirt, but most of the year they were allowed to wear the jeans, and tbh I think years after I graduated it was allowed all year long (most girls preferred the skirt though). Jackets were also allowed, as long as they were black, blue, white or gray.

If a kid's family can't afford to buy them new clothes, they might come to school wearing the same old clothes and be judged for it. If they wear a uniform, no one will notice that they're repeatedly wearing the same outfit.
