Police said Officer Steve Nothem had just arrived to back up a fellow officer on a DWI arrest at westbound lanes of 1905 E. Nothem was taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Plano, where he died.

Police said the cause of the crash is currently under investigation, and funeral services for Nothem are pending. Nothem, 36, is the first Carrollton officer to die in the line of duty. It was Wednesday morning when he was notified at his home in Wisconsin that his son Steve died when his patrol car was struck from behind during a traffic stop in Carrollton.
