Cedars-Sinai Study Finds Association Between Minimally Invasive Procedure for Oropharyngeal Cancer and Longer Survival for Patients Robotic surgery for patients with early stage, oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer is associated with improved health outcomes, including better long-term survival, according to a Cedars-Sinai study published Thursday in JAMA Oncology. Oropharyngeal cancer occurs in the back of the throat and includes the base of the tongue and tonsils. ­­ Transoral robotic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure in which a surgeon uses a computer-enhanced system to guide an endoscope – a flexible tube with a light and camera attached to it – to provide high-resolution, 3D images of the back of the mouth and throat, an area that is difficult to reach with conventional tools.

"There is a learning curve with any new surgical technique, and new ones don't always translate into equal or improved outcomes."
