During the opening ceremony there was an extensive section, as athletes were introduced, in which was played. As many pointed out there was no music from Nintendo franchises or Pokémon, which seemed significant especially in light of Nintendo's prominent role in .

It seems clear that Nintendo would have been asked about appearing. An extensive report at addresses the Opening Ceremony of the Games, and it's an investigative piece that states it's seen 11 varied scripts from throughout the creative process (and multiple project leads). It seems there were three key segments - of varying importance - that were planned with Nintendo at different points.

One plan that seemingly got cut around October 2020 was for a return of the green Mario pipe seen in the Rio Games handover, with Lady Gaga initially pitched to 'emerge' in a Mario hat. The bigger aspect of Nintendo's involvement was for an impressive early sequence that would have been inspired by "the 8-bit world of video games" (that translation is via ); Shigeru Miyamoto was heavily involved in the creative process, attending 'weekly' meetings in Tokyo for some time.

It is suggested that Nintendo had 'mixed feelings' when that concept was eventually cut. Coming back to the music segment from the ceremony, it seems the decision for Nintendo and Pokémon music to not feature was made relatively late.

A draft of the script dated 16th June this year stated that tracks for Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and Pokemon were all planned; none appeared in the final show. Nintendo was approached and declined to comment, according to Bunshun. If you read a translation of the article it's certainly interesting, as it assesses the many disruptions, costs and changes to the opening ceremony.

Companies like Toyota already distanced themselves. I am really happy this report came out, I was looking forward to some nintendo appearance here and there with what we saw at the rio hand off and was solidly disappointed. Though I did enjoy the music pieces they did use (could have done listened to them without the ridiculous amount of commentary from Mike and Savanah we got stateside).

Its well known the Olympics have been extremely unpopular in Japan. With Toyota dropping out so publicly, it’s not far fetched to believe Nintendo didn’t want the bad press attached to supporting the games.

Its a shame, the world was so excited back in 2016. The ceremony was such a let down Well its a smart move on nintendos parts. I for one am glad the olympics went through and hope that it will not result in a surge of cases.

? The intro felt very empty to me, I would've liked seeing some famous Japanese performers get the spotlight (Perfume, or Utada maybe) the Kabuki performance was ok but I can just imagine people outside of Japan just seeing it as weird or frightening. It's just hilarious to me that after all those Mario and Sonic games now it's the one time Mario gets to have any relevance in the actual Olympic games and Nintendo backs out.

Instead what we got looked like a community fair held in an old Olympic stadium, far too small for the venue, and anyone associated with it has to wear a "traitor" brand on their forehead. The IOC really should have delayed another year instead of just blanket stating back in 2020 that it's 2021 or never. This will end up next to Munich, Sarajevo, and Berlin as Olympics that nobody is to ever mention.

Wily, Bass, Strike Man, and some other Robot Masters can join Sonic and company in the Olympics in the future, and instead of "Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games," We'd have "Mega Man & Sonic at the Olympic Games" from Capcom and SEGA! But I think the main reason for Nintendo ducking out is because of the Pandemic. COVID-19 may be under control in America, but the new Delta Variant is causing a spike in cases, and may lead to people like me getting vaccinated again in the future.

While I'm disappointed Nintendo wasn't part of opening ceremony, I understand and respect their decision not to be part of it. Whether we like it or not, things have changed in the world since the Rio 2016 Closing Ceremony. I was hoping they were canceled, but now that they're underway, all I can do is hope for the best and their conclusion with no serious issues.

Hopefully we can all look back and learn from them in the future. At least we have Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, which is a good game if you ignore the fact that there are only 3 Dream Events. By far the most playable in the series.

Zero. So you think COVID poses no danger for athletes, but do you think packing the stadiums with thousands of spectators wouldn't have posed a risk? Especially after what went down during the Euro cup, and with how Japan has lower vaccination rates than U.S and Europe at the moment?

Are they locked up like in a prison or can they visit other places in Tokyo? Do the athletes ever come into contact with workers that will come into contact with people outside of the stadium? This is an incredibly silly take.

I still remember seeing footage of Japanese crowds cheering and crying as they were announced to be next to host them. When I was in Tokyo in Aug 2014 they had posters stuck to lamp posts advertising it taking place in 2020 and now look where we are Not video game related per say but right before the women's judo finals in the -48kg category, they played "Making of a Cyborg", the opening music of Ghost in the Shell.

They're at lower risk of death than the general population, but they're not completely risk-free. Also COVID often results in long-term costs to cardiovascular and pulmonary function, which can easily make a "world-class" athlete no longer one. "Long COVID" could end a career, instantly and completely.

I'm not gonna get into politics here, but I will say that a lotta people in America forget that the mandate being lifted doesn't mean the pandemic is over Don't blame them but this might have been the only spark in what has turned out to be a literal ***** show. Honestly, that’s a very smart decision to protect the public from infection, but we all know it’s gonna get forced on them anyway. I’m surprised that it’s still happening! Let the athletes train longer and then compete...
