The first and probably most important step when dealing with any homeowners association or similar organization is to know your laws and bylaws very well. From vehicles in driveways and fence placement to the size of sheds and the length of your grass, your HOA might try to dictate every tiny little thing about your life in the neighborhood (freshly baked apple pies not included).

Naturally, conflicts arise. Most people in your neighborhood might even have good intentions, but their philosophies and the way they try to reach their goals might differ very much. Usually, we tend to think that our way is the best way, but if you want to get along with your neighbors, at some point, everyone will have to compromise on something.

Though you shouldn't have to settle for someone constantly stepping over your boundaries. Good communication can solve a lot of problems. Even if you feel frustrated with someone, try to be as diplomatic as you can.

You never want to be seen like you're attacking your neighbors because then they'll just get defensive and you won't get any closer to actually solving any issues.

Aim for compromise while you stay up-to-date with the goings on in your neighborhood. In the very worst-case scenarios, if you feel that your HOA is clearly overstepping the law and going mad with power, consider consulting a legal representative and see what options might be available to you.

And you pay them a sh¡t ton of money for the privilege. I’d agree that the HOA was out of line if he’d moved in & the guidelines stipulated he could have 3 cars in his driveway, but a year later changed it to 1 car. That would seem irrational & punitive.

But upon moving in, he KNEW he could only park “1 class C vehicle” in his driveway & he agreed, knowing how many cars he has, and that there’s no such thing as a “class C vehicle.” He moved in knowing exactly what he was going to do. He immediately parked 3 cars in his driveway & waited for the confrontation. That’s ridiculous.

We all agree HOA's suck, but why ruin a public space? He doesn't KNOW it was his neighbors who reported him, it's not like he said he lived next to the HOA board members, so he is just punishing people who have to follow the same rules as he is. He is farting in a cramped space to spite the fact he is in that space.

If the neighbours perceived it as an improvement, for everyone, and OP made no attempt to share his realisation that 1 car the rule could not be enforced, then OP is in part at fault.

As someone else has mentioned emergency vehicles would not have been able to go by and it was blocking traffic on a busy road so I am pretty sure the cops would have made him move or get one of his cars towed.

If the person making the request had no authority to govern the street they would be moving a vehicle without the owner's consent... therefore stealing it.

It comes down to what the laws are in that city. Signage isn’t necessary if laws exist to prohibit parking cars on city streets in ways which endanger other drivers. Blocking the entrance to the neighborhood should suffice.

Aside from blocking emergency vehicles, it causes drivers to stop in the middle of the road, back up, & flip a b***h…that can easily cause an accident & drivers have no alternative but to make dangerous &/or unlawful moves to turn back. Ignorance of the law is not a lawful defense; it’s up to us, as drivers to know the laws.

We all know it’s illegal to park in front of a fire hydrant, but there aren’t any signs beside them warning us not to park there bc it’s illegal. If a city law exists making it illegal to park your vehicle on a city street in any way which hinders traffic from safely passing, they don’t need signs to enforce the law. We’re supposed to know the law.

In the UK there is such a thing as "causing an obstruction", meaning that legally parked vehicles can be removed if they block access. I regularly put advisory notes on windscreens of cars that park badly on our development - along the lines of telling how big a fire engine is, rather than being threatening - it is a cul-de-sac and if you block the road it could cost someone their life, especially as we have a number of elderly residents who need ambulances quite frequently.

I don't 100% agree with HOA's, but I can genuinely see where they are coming from.

He chose to collect BIG things that take up space, he chose to move into an HOA, then he chose to be a dk by ruining the public space for people living under the HOA. He doesn't KNOW it was his neighbors who reported him, it's not like he said he lived next to the HOA board members, so he is just punishing people who have to follow the same rules as he is.

They just add it to the docket and it needs to be voted on by the neighborhood. He clearly stated it was my neighbors who voted in the rule, NOT they turned me in. He also stated the vehicles in his driveway were daily drivers.

If the neighbours perceived it as an improvement, for everyone, and OP made no attempt to share his realisation that 1 car the rule could not be enforced, then OP is in part at fault. I understand them for certain things, for example my neighborhood has a Lake Owners Association which isn't for the entire community, but specifically for those of us on the lake. All the money and rules are to upkeep the private lake. However none of the rules overstep the boundaries on what others can do with their own property.

As someone else has mentioned emergency vehicles would not have been able to go by and it was blocking traffic on a busy road so I am pretty sure the cops would have made him move or get one of his cars towed.

It comes down to what the laws are in that city. Signage isn’t necessary if laws exist to prohibit parking cars on city streets in ways which endanger other drivers. Blocking the entrance to the neighborhood should suffice.

Aside from blocking emergency vehicles, it causes drivers to stop in the middle of the road, back up, & flip a b***h…that can easily cause an accident & drivers have no alternative but to make dangerous &/or unlawful moves to turn back. Ignorance of the law is not a lawful defense; it’s up to us, as drivers to know the laws. We all know it’s illegal to park in front of a fire hydrant, but there aren’t any signs beside them warning us not to park there bc it’s illegal.

In the UK there is such a thing as "causing an obstruction", meaning that legally parked vehicles can be removed if they block access.
