Although those figures may seem shocking, most experts agree that the real number of women whose first sexual experience is rape is likely much higher. “That number is actually only the tip of the iceberg, because only women ages 18 to 44 were interviewed; if the interviews had included the whole population of women, that number would be millions higher,” says Laura Hawks, MD, lead author of the study and research fellow at the Cambridge Health Alliance in Massachusetts.
