Luckily, there are several ways you can organize that long list of channels on the left side of your Slack app to make it at least somewhat easier to deal with. Have employers become more demanding or less solicitous? Surely in 2020, when workers were locked up at home with roommates, spouse, and children, everything was different.

And perhaps Slack might someday offer these features to the free accounts as well. The inspiration for this functionality comes from the instinctual behavior of copying and pasting links, which users already perform hundreds of times a day to share websites, messages, and files. So what’s been happening for a decade that would make people more stressed, less happy, and more burnt out?

Obviously, social phenomena cannot be pinned to a single cause, but I would put the root cause of worker burnout not primarily on bosses’ expectations from work but on workers’ expectations from work. Starred channels appear on top of your list of channels in a category called (of course) Starred. I’m not the kind of person who believes a job is strictly transactional.

On a computer, right-click on any of your channels and select Move To > Starred . As a solution, we’ve introduced a new modular architecture grounded in “building blocks. Future Forum’s report—released by Slack, which makes tools it hopes will serve as a “ digital HQ ” for hybrid workers—found that workers who have full flexibility with their schedules say they are 29% more productive and 53% more able to focus than those who have no schedule flexibility.

Advertisement Whether you go serverless with Slack or keep your code in house, always make sure you’re using the proper tools for your organization’s needs. Once that’s done, you’ll see a new category above Channels called Starred, which — with all the conversations you’ve assigned to it — will now head all the others. Millennials and Gen Z are far less likely to belong to an organized religion.

In that case, you can mute the channel. This will gray out the names of the channels (but you’ll still see it bolded or numbered if there are notifications). In the desktop app, right-click the channel name; in the mobile app, long-press the channel name.

Workism is “the belief that work is not only necessary to economic production, but also the centerpiece of one’s identity and life’s purpose; and the belief that any policy to promote human welfare must always encourage more work. Then, in either case, select Mute channel All the rest of the features mentioned here are currently available for paid accounts only. Create sections You can create a variety of categories — known as sections — in order to organize all your channels.

Any channels that you don’t categorize will stay in the existing section called Channels. So the root of millennial and Gen Z burnout isn’t our economy or their bosses. For example, I created a section called Priority for the channels I always have to pay attention to, one called Interesting for the channels I want to monitor but that aren’t vital to my work, and LowPri for the ones that I simply need to be aware of.

Everything else stayed in the basic Channels section. To create a new section (which you can only do using the desktop version): Right-click on the channel you want to recategorize and click on or hover over Move channel .
