As long as regulators keep diesel alive in Europe, German sedans like these will continue to exist. Part of that has to do with the fact that fuel is so much more expensive in Europe and diesels get great gas mileage, but the two luxury sedans in question in this test aren&#39;t exactly Volkswagen Golfs meant for the frugally minded buyer. That&#39;s because the BMW 530d and Mercedes E350d tested here come in at $57,825 and $58,910 respectively, or enough to turn your neighbor&#39;s heads and spoil yourself with the multitude of standard features.

Americans tend to have an image of diesels as cars that are slow, clunky, and a bit dirty. However both the Bimmer and Mercedes prove that diesels can offer a bundle of fun, with both cars offering supreme dynamics in the corners and gobs of diesel torque. We&#39;re not exactly too jealous that cars like this aren&#39;t prevalent in the US, but it&#39;s still nice to know how Germany&#39;s two biggest rivals stack up in this segment.
