The lone exception is Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, who stated the obvious when he told reporters at the league meetings in New York that he believes “there’s merit to removing (Snyder) as owner.” Anyone who’s been paying the least bit of attention has seen that for years. In 2004, he bought the racing venue in Spielberg, Austria, that would eventually be known as Red Bull Ring, launching renovations and renaming the venue before it reopened in 2011. The question is if anyone in charge besides Irsay ever will be willing to do anything about it.

The way Jones describes the situation, at least publicly, Snyder is not close to getting the boot. Removing him, per league rules, would require the votes of 24 owners, and Jones said this week he didn’t even expect Snyder to be a topic of discussion during the league meetings. The team is now on the verge of another constructors title, which would come on the heels of Max Verstappen’s 2021 and ’22 driver titles. “That’s more a media thing than an internal thing,” Jones told The Fan.

Per ESPN’s story, when Jones made his “don’t (expletive) with me” remark, it was about a completely different topic. Reportedly, it concerned a disagreement about a proposal for commissioner Roger Goodell’s new contract. The company also owns soccer teams Red Bull Salzburg, New York Red Bulls, RB Leipzig and Red Bull Brasil; hockey teams EHC Munchen and EC Red Bull Salzburg; and esports team Red Bull OG.

So Jones is willing to put his foot down about something. Just not about Snyder, who’s been a continual source of embarrassment for the league almost since he bought the Washington franchise in 1999.

There’s no hiding from it anymore. In June, a Congressional committee released a report saying Snyder had directed a “shadow investigation” to interfere with and undermine the findings of the NFL’s first probe into the matter. Also this year, the Washington Post reported a team employee accused Snyder of asking her for sex, groping her and attempting to remove her clothes in 2009, shortly before the franchise agreed to pay her a settlement of $1.6 million.

In 2020, the Post cited claims by more than a dozen women who worked for the organization that they had been subjected to abusive behavior over the course of more than a decade. In July 2021, the league fined Snyder $10 million, with Goodell saying an investigation found “bullying and intimidation frequently took place and many described the culture as one of fear, and numerous female employees reported having experienced sexual harassment and a general lack of respect in the workplace.” But the NFL’s first report was not released.

It’s unclear when the league’s current investigation, which is being led by former Security and Exchange Commission chair Mary Jo White, will be completed or if its findings will be made public. During a press conference Tuesday, Goodell confirmed he instructed owners to withhold public comments until White’s probe is complete, saying, “Speculation without facts is not a very positive thing to do.” But the yearslong silence about Snyder isn’t positive for the league, either. And it looks even worse in light of a recent ESPN report that cited league sources who said Snyder has claimed to be tracking owners, with one owner reportedly saying Snyder told him he “has dirt on Jerry Jones.” Asked this week by The Fan if he felt obligated to defend Snyder as a fellow owner, Jones said, “Not at all.

If they don’t act, could Snyder be in for an outcome similar to the one faced by Robert Sarver, another scandal-plagued professional sports team owner who finally decided to sell the Phoenix Suns after pressure from sponsors? It’s too soon to tell.
