The title came about 33 years ago when President Ronald Reagan issued this proclamation: “Ice cream is a nutritious and wholesome food, enjoyed by over 90 percent of the people in the United States. It enjoys a reputation as the perfect dessert and snack food.” Citing the economic benefit of ice cream for the U.S. dairy industry, President Reagan then declared July 1984 as National Ice Cream Month and Sunday, July 15, 1984, as National Ice Cream Day.
