Outside influences of drugs and gangs are turning up in our communities and the safety of our people is in peril. Now the population of many First Nations exceeds that of the local towns and villages and policing is a dangerous distance away. Clearly, we need changes in policing.

A former member of the RCMP told me of the orientation of a new police officer in the detachment. Formerly another RCMP officer would take the new officer out to the reserve and drive around, pointing out all the trouble spots.

They wanted to try something new, so they took a new officer out to the reserve and introduced him to the chief and council. The inquest heard Freeman had died a number of months before he was found. Then they left and told the leadership to show them around.

On Friday, the jury thanked the people of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation where Freeman was from — and where the first day of the inquest was held — for welcoming them into their home. What do you get when you buy this small superb driving machine? An excellent second car, or even the only car for a household that uses trains and planes for travel.

The result was a complete change. First, the band council appreciated the respect that the local detachment had for them, and the new officer got a real appreciation for the community.

The jury also acknowledged the “courage and strength” of Freeman’s grandmother, Pamela Freeman, throughout the process. As the former member told me, the new officer took ownership of the community and did an outstanding job keeping his people safe.

The safety of our people is paramount to any police service, and we need to explore all the alternatives. Many recommendations involved increased communication between agencies involved in youth care — from police to children’s aid societies — as well as with First Nations communities when dealing with Indigenous youth in care.

He is a member of the Little Pine First Nation. Jurors heard Freeman attempted suicide earlier in 2017 and had a history of suicidal thoughts and self-harm while in a residential program in 2015 and 2016, culminating in another reported suicide attempt.
