Blades At The Ready Because Samurai Shodown V Is Coming To Switch Next Week Nintendo Life It's time for another Shodown by Share: Hamster has confirmed the next game getting the retro revival treatment is 2003's epic (also known as Samurai Spirits Zero), which is due to arrive on the Japanese Nintendo Switch eShop on 5th July, with a price tag of ¥823. No word on a western release, but it's likely to follow soon as Hamster rarely keeps us retro-loving westerners in the dark for too long.

The fighting game was actually the eighth entry in the series, and takes place before the events of the original Samurai Shodown (despite having a 'V' in the title). It was also one of the last games to be released on the Neo Geo. Are you a Neo Geo nut?

Really could use a folder system right about now to get them a little organised. cool, that’s so impressive. I’m only just coming back to Nintendo myself, still haven’t gotten round to getting a memory card for it(the switch).

There’s so many great games i wanna get I tend to go a little crazy when there's a console that I really love. And since I especially love handhelds, well, it was just the perfect storm really. I'm now just over 50 retail games and I don't quite know how many digital games I have. All the Neo Geo games, pretty much every arcade shoot em up that's been released so far.

Reason why this is called Samurai Shodown V in the west is because it is the fifth main Samurai Shodown game to be release in the west. Reason why it was called Samurai Spirits Zero in Japan is because it took place before the first Samurai Spirit game storywise (a prequel). In the west it goes like this: Samurai Shodown Samurai Shodown II Samurai Shodown RPG Samurai Shodown III: Blades of Blood Samurai Shodown IV: Amakusa's Revenge Samurai Shodown 64 Samurai Shodown 64 II: Warrior's Rage Samurai Shodown: Warrior's Rage 2 Samurai Shodown V Samurai Shodown V Special Samurai Shodown VI Samurai Shodown Sen In Japan it actually goes like this: Storywise: Samurai Spirits Zero (Samurai Shodown V) Samurai Spirits (Samurai Shodown) Samurai Spirits: Zankuro Musouken (Samurai Shodown III) Samurai Spirits: Amakusa Kourin (Samurai Shodown IV) Shin Samurai Spirits (Samurai Shodown II) Samurai Spirits Sen (Samurai Shodown Sen) Samurai Spirits: Samurai Damashii Chapter 1 (Samurai Shodown 64) Samurai Spirits: Samurai Damashii Chapter 2: Asura Zanmaden (Samurai Shodown 64: Warrior's Rage) Kenkaku Ibunroku Yomigaerishi Soukou no Yaiba Samurai Spirits Shinshou (Samurai Shodown: Warrior's Rage 2) Games with no stories (dream match titles) or are just spinoffs: Samurai Spirits Gaiden (Samurai Shodown RPG) Samurai Spirits Zero Special (Samurai Shodown V Special) Samurai Spirits VI (Samurai Shodown VI) Samurai Shodown VI is like the be all have all ultimate version of the game similar to games like Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Mortal Kombat Armageddon, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max, Tekken Tag Tournament 1 & 2, and Super Smash Bros.

Ultimate where it features every playable characters from past main entry (SS0-SSV) up to that point alongside few new characters like Iroha, Karakuri, Andrew, Sugoroku, etc., characters from console ports, spinoffs, and side games doesn't make it to the game so no playable Hikyaku from the Game Boy port of SS, no Shiki, Asura, Taizan, Hanma, and Yuga from Samurai Shodown 64 I & II, and no Seishiro, Rinka, Ran Po, Oboro, Mikoto, and Saya from Samurai Shodown: Warrior's Rage 2. Also every new characters from Samurai Shodown Sen are not included as that game came after SSVI.

Why they keep releasing vanilla V anywhere is beyond me. Are they just preying on noobs that don't know any better? What is the best Samurai Shodown game?

While nothing has really changed (they still don’t talk to the fans and are still so secretive) nothing compares to a Nintendo game and Nintendo hardware. Since getting the switch it is all I’ve played The best one might be debatable, but my favourite one still is Samurai Showdown 2. I'd have to say, ever since the Dreamcast was discontinued, Nintendo were the ones that kept me gaming, despite their ups and downs.

Even though I buy all the other systems as well. The last couple of years before the Switch certainly have been very rough, yet even in their worst years, they have kept me entertained. Glad see them back on top of their game though. Personally, I thought Samurai Shodown 5 and 6 were when the series really went downhill.

3 and 4 weren't nearly as good as the first two but they were still pretty good fighting games. 5 and 6 just felt like missteps and I didn't really enjoy them. Samurai Shodown 2 is widely considered to be the best in the series, and I also feel that way myself.

For the time being it's just NEO Turf Masters for me until they update this. They've pretty much done that with all the NEO GEO games that have updated versions. Looks to me like Hamster REALLY intend on releasing almost everything NEO GEO on modern systems.

And with hardy if any licensed games on the system/systems, they're probably going to do it. And heck, if there are gamers out there who are either picking up every NEO GEO game or have some kind of nostalgia for an original version over the updated version (Fighter buffs, missing stuff, etc.), then given the copy and paste nature of these ports, its probably worth releasing EVERYTHING. I vehemently disagree with people complaining about this release because SSV Special is better.

It's interesting to see the progression and development of the franchise, and hey - some people might just have a nostalgic personal attachment to what the majority feel is a "worse" game. This week's release (Money Puzzle Exchanger) was number 74 for the ACA Neo Geo series.

I also have 100% Then again, I sold many very expensive AES carts last year - my Samurai Spirits Zero alone was about the price of the entire set of current Switch Neo ports, so I don't particularly mind the $8 a week! Sad thing is it will come to an end before too long. There are probably only 100 or so Neo games that are highly likely releases, with another 12 or so somewhat longer shots, and another ~30-40ish that are highly unlikely due to licensing.
